As the 3.5/35-105 SMC-A is as good as they come I�m quite sure that the optical quality is visibly better than what the Vivitar can offer - I have no personal experience of the Vivitar, though. The Pentax lens I have and it is very, very good indeed - equalled only by the new 24-90. All the best!
