I finally had the time to test the ME-F with its fast 35-70mm F/2.8 AF
lens. I shot a roll of film and was very pleased:

AF is not fast but it is not slow either, the lens moves slowly but
always knows in which direction to turn and is quite precise. Going from
close focus to infinity takes some time but small focus changes are
fast. Focus accuracy and repeatability is very good. I ask myself how
Pentax cameras would be today if Pentax had improved on the ME-F AF
design moving the large batteries to the camera but keeping the motor in
the lens instead of doing it from scratch several years later.

Some people say the lens is heavy but with no batteries it is only 580g,
not much for an all metal well built constant aperture F/2.8 35-70mm
zoom.
As to the glass I really have no bad things to say: it's fast and
performs well even wide open (sharper than the F 35-70 3.5-4.5) and has
no obvious distortion.
