1: In-body IS is generally not as effective as in-lens IS. The value of IB-IS is that it can apply to all lenses.
2: Given that Canon has an excellent range of IL-IS lenses AND has a mount with adequate features/connections to support it as well as other lens information, they could come out with an IB-IS solution that also allowed use of the IL-IS lenses.
I question your comment on Canon's history ... Canon dropped their FL- FD mount more than 23 years ago to go with the EOS mount. The EOS mount has not changed since: it is still ahead of its time. Yes, a lot of Canon FL-FD users were pissed off (and remain so), but I think Canon certainly made a move that has stood the test of time well.
