Unless you have IS. I have read accounts and seen pics handheld with 600/ f4 in a few situations where a tripod head was broken, or not enough time to set up for a bird or whatever. In general I would agree with you that 600mm is not a hand-holdable focal length, but it is not only possible, and the results can be astonishing. I'll see if I can remember where I saw it.
