I think that's multi-segment metering working as designed. I suspect some glint in the background affected the metering. If you want the metering to behave more like traditional centre weighted then don't use multi-segment metering. That said I don't find that my *ist D provides 100% repeatable results when I use it in modes that automatically stop down the aperture even in manual mode.
