Sorry you had a bad day Glenn. I've gone out shooting twice in the last
couple of days, and had a pretty good time despite not getting the shot
I wanted.

Yesterday I went down to the Washington Monument to get a shot Jeepgirl
said was impossible. The shot was there but there are some timing issues
involved, so I set up my tripod and waited.

While waiting, I had about 10 people come up and talk to me. It's
funny...people who live in the DC area would sooner pee on you then talk
to you in public, but people will travel from thousands of miles away
and strike up a conversation.

One couple walked up to me and mumbled something totally and completely
incomprehensible. I asked the man three times what he was saying, and
all I got out of it was "camera" and "rewind", and maybe a little spray.
They were an Irish couple on holiday and apparently couldn't get the
film to rewind in their p+s. It had been stuck since Boston.

I took a look, and there was, of course, no film in it. They argued
about who lost the film for about 10 minutes, paused, and asked me to
take a picture of them. They smiled for 3 seconds, then started arguing
again. Finally he grabbed her ass, she giggled, and they headed on their
way.

Well, I couldn't get the shot yesterday, so I went back today and set up
in the same spot. After 10 minutes of waiting, I felt the hairs on my
neck start to stand on end, so I turned around to find an entire teenage
tour group clustered behind me. Their appointed spokesperson, a 15 y.o.
girl with braces and an "I HEART DC" tattoo on her forehead asked me
what I was shooting. I told her to take a look. 15 teenagers and 2
chaperones proceeded to peek through the finder and exclaim "ooh!". 17
times I had to explain what a fisheye was, and why I would use an orange
filter.

Iowans are so cute.

Oh, and then there was the matter of the Connecticut Young Republicans
chaperone trying to pick me up, but that's another story.

So I stood there for an hour...waiting, waiting, waiting....and people
just kept walking up and talking to me.

"Why is the marble different colors in different spots?"

"How do you get inside?"

"How many flags are there?"

"How long have you been standing there?"

"Where's Central Station?"

Again, I didn't get the shot...but it's there and I'll keep going back
until I get it.
