Working with a Leica, and other RF cameras, you get pretty good at
visualizing DoF. I used to use it a lot in the Spottie days, and
I really
like the feature for times it's needed, but these days it's not
needed too
often, plus it slows down getting the shot.
I could never get excited about DOF review, because my eyes would
accommodate so well (I guess) I found it hard to tell where the
demarcation was between IN and OUT of focus.
Of course, there is no such sharp line, but...using the lens
aperture-closing feature to determine if something was not quite in
focus, well, it just never worked for me.
The biggest thing I use DoF Preview for is to see what the OOF
rendering looks like in a hurry from wide open to the taking
aperture. I don't try to judge sharpness zone, just look to see if
anything in the background looks offensively jangled and adjust the
aperture until it doesn't.
Since I'm fairly familiar with most of my lenses rendering and
normally have chosen Av and the aperture that I know will give me the
results I want, I find I use it pretty infrequently except in the
case of zoom lenses, where the OOF rendering changes with focal
length, aperture and distance more radically.
