the whole industry has been saying that there is a small time window left before everything freezes because the market becomes saturated. it will happen this year for the total digital camera market, and no later than the end of next year for the DSLR market. after then, if you aren't making money with the market share/revenue that you have, you never will, because price cutting and competition is only going to get tougher. Pentax has been going after the bottom, getting market share, and losing money while they are at it. if they were losing money by investing heavily in R&D, i wouldn't worry much, but instead they are laying off people and transfering people, including engineers, from the imaging products division to other divisions.

Depending on what they see an sufficient technology to upgrade from the istD with, we may have a bit of a wait until the technology going into it is enough behind the curve to satisfy their rather odd mindset about competing in the marketplace.
