Dave as nice as an Alaskan cruise might be, You'll miss alot of the variety that is Alaska. I've done an "Alaskan cruise" on an Alaskan Marine Highway boat up the "inside passage from Seattle to Skagway. You can get off at any stop and get on another boat, headed in the same direction, at a later time. That way you can spend any amount of time at any interesting stop along the way. But to really see Alaska you also need to go inland. If your trip to Alaska doesn't include several days in Denali you've missed a tremendous photographic opportunity. It like being in a fenceless Zoo. I've got two brothers who have taken the typical Alaskan cruise (also included a land portion of a few days) they claim to have "seen Alaska". The Alaskans call this commercial tourism. If you can only go to Alaska once, I heartily recommend making it into Denali.
