There are many sub-groups, a formal portrait would be one, casual record shots (like the ones you make as you dismantle an item for repair) may be another, the official pic made at the finish line of a horse race, a set of images made with a view to assembling a pano could be casually executed but display obvious deliberate intent, police mug-shots etc. IOW it's probably a waste of time trying to apply a rigid definition to such a loose term.
