On 24/7/05, Bob W, discombobulated, unleashed: >What photographs and photographers were your first inspiration?
Gosh I can't remember. It was 1977 when I did photography at art college. I can't remember being inspired by anyone. Possibly Ansel Adams. But I was discovering other art forms as well, and instantly fell in love with Turner's work, an adoration which continues unabated to this day. My paintings emulated his, and accordingly I was pitied by contemporaries as back in the 70's, he was not as highly regarded by teenagers as perhaps today. But then again, he's now completely over-hyped. It was nearly 20 years later when I discovered Jeanloup Sieff, Arnold Newman, HCB, Robert Frank, and rediscovered my photography completely. It was like a rebirth. Very refreshing. I can't pin it down to one single photograph though. For instant inspiration, I can open a book by any of the above, and it's like a battery recharge - I'm off and running!
