All well and good, but these items don't seem like they're for the average
guy on the street, mostly for studio players. Pentax would do well to come
out with a smaller, lighter, more transportable, easier to carry,
med-format digi, something to simply and economically replace the various
film-based med format cameras that are out there.

Am I missing something wrt these Phase One backs?

The 645 itself wqas not really marketed to studio photographers. It was Pentax's forray into high quality imaging at a more transportable size than the 6x7. The untended user was nature photographers, and they were flogged pretty hard at them. Hasselblad always seemed to be going after the fashion market, Mamiya the studio portrait market, etc. While one shouldn't try to pigeon hole a product line, there is lots of cross contamination of purpose, this was how they were marketed.

It does seem to me that somewhere out there, there are a heck of a lot of 645 lenses sitting around, perhaps being underutilized.
Whether the 645 lenses are suited to digital, I just do not know.
