Frantisek asked for a clarification of the calculation.... It's more of a tongue-in-cheek rationalization than a real calculation (as I suspect of your analysis...)
I converted the total number of digital shots to the equivalent number of 36 exposure rolls of film and multiplied by the current cost of processing. Then I compared that to the cost of the camera, lens and memory cards. This completely ignores the differences in workflow between then and now. It's worse than comparing apples to oranges. It's more like comparing apples to hammers. The great thing about spreadsheets is you can manipulate the numbers until you get the answer that makes you happy. I don't think you can make a fair comparison unless you're pretty organized and comparing apples to apples. Someone like a wedding or event photographer could probably do a fair and accurate comparison. Since I do this for fun, I can delude myself with the spreadsheet in several creative ways. As of yesterday, I save 21 cents every time I click the shutter. If I can click it enough times I may be able to retire early! See you later, gs
