i thought this was well known. Niepce light sensitive material was so slow
that it required an entire sunny day to get something resembling "proper"
exposure. it meant he could do his processing in daylight, dissolving away
the softer parts. one Talbot contribution was that he figured out how to
turn a negative into a positive. the other was that he learned how to fix
the image so that it lasted more than a few days.

The Daguerrotype was not yet conceived, so photography was not yet born,
as
such. However, this year Nicephore Niepce invented a new photographic
process,
based on a light sensitive substance called "Judea bitumen".
Interestingly, this is a negative process, and thus predates Talbot's
process
(which is generally considered as the first negative process) by more than
a
decade.
