I've done this for some stuff: local backup here plus another copy in the USA. With that strategy in place I figured that if I lost my files then I'd probably have far more important things to worry about.

These days I backup onto both my fileserver (in the garage) and my iPod, but I'm still not handling large volumes of data.

I guess for digital images you could go full circle and buy a film recorder ;)
