I use a pair of 250G drives (WDs, Hitachis, Fujis, Seagates,
whatever) in good quality FireWire enclosures for archive/backup. The
two drives are identical to each other in terms of their content. The
probability of both external drives, never plugged into the system at
the same time, failing simultaneously is infinitesimal. If one fails,
I simply, I'll go buy another bare drive, plug it into the enclosure
(after testing that the housing is in good condition), and recopy the
data from the good one. Easy, very secure.
I also back up files on a project by project basis to multiple copies
in CD-R and DVD-R media. The key to digital archiving is replication,
not media persistence.
My 250s are getting a bit full. Soon, I'll replace them with a pair
of 500G drives... :-)
