It seems that HCB has, over the years, become somewhat of an icon, and while I've learned to appreciate his work, it's not all that socially relevent, etc. That's not to say that a fair amount of his work did not have a socially relevent context, but from the POV of making a specific social statement many of his peers at Magnum did better work. HCB seemed to be looking for the art in a photo, relationships, geometries, sarcasm, beauty, grace - any of a number of things. OTOH, photographers like Chim, WES, and many others seemed more driven by story and drama, and their photos often took us to deeper levels.
