I think you hit the nail on the head regarding power supplies.
If you have spent most of your time with Macs or high end PC's reliability of power supply should be less of an issue, and reliability of hardware, drives included, should also be higher.
Cheap power supplies can cause all sorts of problems.
Upon reflection, I do wonder how many of the WD complaints that I have heard were caused by cheap power supplies screwing things up..
