I can certainly see the beam of the AF500FTZ and it's red. It is not
as disruptive as the white beam I have seen coming off Nikon bodies,
but YMMV.

The Z-1 pop-up and Metz beams are red as well (and disrupting in my experience). David and I seem to be misunderstanding each other...

The point I tried to make is that there are flashes that allow the use of the AF-assist beam during focussing, without firing the flash during exposure. That was the original question, I think?
