Summicrons are available in SLR and RF designs, the Leica SLR lenses are monsters, the M (RF) lenses are compact due in part to the smaller mounting flange to film plane distance. Leica M lenses also benefit size wise from not having to accommodate aperture control levers or other mechanical linkages. That said the Summicron-M ASPH 35 doesn't protrude further into the what would be the mirror space than the Pentax 31LTD lens, it's a pretty unconventional design, the front and rear lens elements are concave in profile.
