Thanks William. Will the grey card take into account the translucence? I don't have one, so I cannot check :-) If I don't need to do that, could I use my palm, then?

You may still need to make minor adjustments based on individual scenes, but a gray card beside the subject should put you really close to the right exposure. The nice thing about a gray card is it obviates any colour shifts that the meter might be prone to.
