It turns out that the smaller sensor size does have a smaller circle of
confusion, so depth of field will be noticeably LESS with the digital
camera, if you assume the same focal distance, lens focal length, and
aperture settings.
However, if you compare an 18mm (1.5 crop digital) lens with a 28mm (35mm
film) lens, which should give approximately the same angle of view and
approximately the same picture, it turns out that the "equivalent" digital
lens has noticeably MORE depth of field. So generally speaking, the images
from my *istDS should have more depth of field than the images taken with
my Nikon film camera. This assumes the use of lenses which yield the same
angle of view on each camera, and use the same aperture setting on each camera.
Incidentally, am I the only one who misses the depth of field markings on
the newer lenses? ;)
