4 important non-upgradeable things that would make me choose the
Powerbook:
- more pixels on the screen (1280x854 versus 1024x768)
- a larger screen
- a better video card (only important for 3D work and games but also
  makes the OS run smoother)
- DVI video output

Wifi coverage is better on the iBook because of the plastic case.

You're right about RAM: 512Mb is minimum, 1Gb or more is nice.

If you upgrade the hard disk choose one with liquid bearings, they're a
lot quieter.

The iBook is a pain to take apart for something as simple as changing
the hard drive, I never took a Powerbook apart but I've been told it's a
lot better.

Any USB keyboard or mouse will work on any of them.

If need to read Compact Flash cards just buy a Compact Flash to PC-CARD
adapter, it uses no power and is faster than an USB one (it's just a
size-adapter with no electronics in it, Compact Flash, Pc-Card and IDE
are basically the same)
