Just to clarify. The government outlawed semi automatic firearms. Not all guns.

A friend of mine had a .22 semi-automatic rifle. The government bought
it off him as part of the "buy back scheme" implemented after the Port
Arthur shooting. He used the money to buy a more powerful .22 magnum
bolt action rifle.

If you want, you can still get a gun. Just not one that shoots as fast
as you can pull the trigger.
