My nephew graduated from high school this June and my brother, in a senior moment, grabbed his Canon AE1 and loaded a roll of slide film rather than print film. The machine prints that were made by the photofinisher near him were moderately awful, so he sent them to me to see what might be done.

I did the usual scan and Photoshop rescue effort and, looking for a cheap and easy way to get them printed, dropped full rez JPEGs into iPhoto and ordered two sets of 4x6s through the Apple online service. $0.19 per print.

The completed order arrived in the mail less than 48 hours later and I have to give them credit: they were better quality prints than I'd expected, and significantly better than what I got the last time I use the local Wolfe Camera photofinishing service from similar originals.

The magazine I work for these days, Digital Camera Magazine, wants to do a roundup and comparison article on the on-line printing services. I'm not writing it, but I offered to help the writer by getting some opinions.

I'd appreciate feedback from people who have used such services for ordinary printing jobs, which I'll define as 4 X 6 up to, say, 8 1/2 X 11 prints. I'm primarily interested in print quality, but speed of service is also an issue. Since we're a USA publication, we're interested in services in the USA.

Thanks in advance for your feedback on this.
