I shot quite a bit of Ultra 50 and never noticed it to be that fine grained.
Where it was great was in diffused light where most films would look drab.
It also had fairly narrow exposure lattitude for a print film.  Once it was
gone I, too, have looked for a replacement.  I have yet to find one.  The
closest I've found is Agfa Optima II 100 and Konica Impressa 50.  The Konica
is finer grained than the Ultra, but it doesn't do as well in subdued light.
The Afga Optima is a bit better in subdued light, but still not the punch of
Ultra.  I always liked to the think of it as the Velvia of print films.
