There were actually quite a few sunflowers in the field, but none with the smaller flowers, (I'm not sure if they were buds or not), on either side. In fact the less than perfect condition of the flower was what first attracted my attention to this particular bloom.

I never realized until yesterday, that a sunflower is made up of hundreds of tinier flowers (does that make it a composite?). Each tiny flower coming out of the 'butt-end' of an individual sunflower seed.
