I'll tell you how it worked at the photo shop where I worked in
Pittsburgh, as I expect the business model is similar in most other
places:

There is a business called Fotowire.com; Photofinishing shops sign up
with Fotowire, which then serves as an intermediary between the customer
and the shop. Fotowire distributes its own free software to customers -
it's basically a simplified FTP client that is intended only for photos
and only to connect to one FTP server (Fotowire) and hides all the
technical details of FTP from the consumer.

The consumer installs the software on their machine and uploads any
photos they want printed, choosing from any Fotowire-affiliated shop in
the country to do the printing. Fotowire forwards the files to the
specified shop, which has its own Fotowire download software to simplify
the handling of the files. The shop prints the files as they would any
others. Then the customers pick up the finished prints at the shop.

It's mostly 4x6 stuff and the occasional 5 x 7 that we saw.
