Shel, now you're talking ;-). In fact, all this time I was doing my b/w conversions based on the exactly opposite assumption. Convert to b/w as soon as possible, then go about maximizing the quality of the image itself...

The question that comes to mind is "What is meant by optimizing the quality of the color image?" When doing RAW conversion for B&W rendering, "optimizing" the quality isn't the same as making a perfect color image, to me. I define it as 'make sure there is adequate data in all three channels to work with in rendering to B&W'.
