On the other hand they had to write a colour management system because MS didn't have one. Now GIMP developers appear to be doing the same thing, instead of building it into X where it should be.

Adobe may as well have carried on and written an entire OS for running Photoshop :)

Actually, as I understand it, the color management is only loosely a function of the OS. The Winders CM only 1. Tells programs what ICC profile various devices use (such as the current monitor, printer, etc) 2. Provides the interpolation engine for linking profiles together and rendering. It's still up to the application as to whether or not it implements color management.

Under that paradigm, the littleCMS engine under linux is basically the same thing. X need not be involved, except in the arguable need to install a custom LUT. Otherwise, all the basic tools are already there for that.
