I'm not well-read, so I don't drop book titles very often (not having read many of those things - books that is), but one of my faves is Under the Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles (who was quite a photog, BTW, and had at least one book of photos published that I'm aware of). One of the characters (can't remember which) was quite adamant that (s)he was "a traveller, and not a tourist", as they trekked about the Middle East/Northern Africa.
