The 1:1 magnification referred to the image size on film vs. actual size. I
don't know how that works with APS sized sensors.


The same.  1:1 is the same whether film or digital sensor.

Sloppy definitions of macro came along when lens makers started calling the close focus capability of some zoom lenses "macro", when it was nothing of the kind.
