Hi all,

I decided the other day that on Saturday [today], I'd take a look around the
secondhand shops like I used to do regularly, looking for used camera gear. I
haven't done this for a few months as I've been using my Saturdays for
mountain biking (which I also did today).

In the window of first shop I went to, I saw the gem... the SMC-A*85mm f/1.4.
After a quick inspection of the optics & mechanics I bought it. The price I
paid was NZ$795 which works out to about US$330 at the current exchange
rate. I believe this qualifies as an absolute steal, but I can't find any of them
on Ebay, KEH or B&H and a web search turned up too much unrelated stuff
so I don't know what they sell for in the US (can someone fill me in?).

The optics are in perfect condition, and the lens is in very good mechanical
condition. It makes a quiet "rubbing" sound when focussing (like something
rubbing on felt... is this normal?) but feels really smooth, but with less damping
than I'm used to from a MF lens.

I've taken about 3 quick photos with it and it seems pretty nice to use. But I
really do need to get a hood for it. I'll go shopping for that tomorrow... then I'll
go shooting :) (and I'm really hoping I can pick up that A* 300/4 too)

Cheers,

- Dave
