That's right. Batch conversion is the way to go.
Not exclisivly for panoramas, which i love to do, but also for other shots,
where it's crutial to be able to move faces opr objects from one frame to
the other. Group portraits, for instance. Some nice old lady is always
closing her eyes at the wrong moment :-)

i think so. i used to use it for batch conversions because i didn't need
super high quality for the component images of a panorama. however, my
stitching program PhotoVista 3.5, is now improved to the point where it
matters, and PS CS2 does background batch conversion really easily, so i
don't need to manually open and save each image anymore.
