The Nikon AI series lenses, the most lenses used by professionals since the mid-1970s, are still supported by the top of the line Nikon models, both film and digital, but NONE of the low end or midrange models support metering with them at all now. There's no "crippled mount" or kludge or workaround ... metering simply doesn't work, although the lenses continue to operate just fine.

I think Pentax has done their legacy product users a great service by providing metering with these old lenses, and corrected the absence of this feature on the initial DSLR offering after users complained pretty quickly. To me, that seems pretty supportive. ;-)
