that is a possibility, but i didn't think that the *istD was especially
sensitive in the infrared. the 4-stop HiTech filter plus the circular
polarizer ought to be around 5 stops difference. which channels in the
camera ought to be responding how?

Are they showing an infrared sensitivity of the camera that your eye
can't see thru the viewfinder. That is, reduced visible spectrum with
the filters, but no so reduced in the infrared spectrum...and the
camera picks that up.
