By similar token, Canon does not state in their instruction manual
"The default settings are best for image processing, you'll have to
change them to get great JPEGs suitable for direct printing." No
manufacturer makes that kind of statement in their instruction book,
for any camera. They all simply say how great their cameras are and
then present the options. How to use them best is up to the user to
figure out.
A naïve user won't AND a naïve user would likely be confused by such
a statement. Therefore, Pentax' decision on the default JPEG settings
and scene modes in the DS, which is being marketed to a broad
spectrum of users at the entry level end of the market, makes perfect
sense to me.
(I know several users in the entry-level category who bought a Canon
10D and were very dissatisfied with it because they took a bunch of
pictures, went to print them, and they looked worse than the output
from their Canon digicam did. Several sold their 10D and went back to
a digicam, and were happier, despite the generally poorer results.)
