if Pentax stayed as an engineering company and continued to run the camera
business as it was 5 years ago, it would no longer be in the camera business
by now.

I see it as a symptom of Pentax changing from primarily an engineering
company to a marketing company. This transformation has worked well for
some, HP and Sony for instance, Kodak is currently trying to do something
of the same thing. Many of us think Kodak will fail. I hope Pentax
doesn't, I can't afford to replace my current kit with the equivalent from
Canon.
