I went up mid-80's, when the top 1/2 of the road was unpaved. My (then) wife was hanging on with white knuckles as I swung the old Taurus around those hairpins <LOL>. The worst part was the shuttle buses, for those without cars but too cheap to take the funicular railway. Those guys tore up and down with (seemingly) not regard for anyone's safety.
