The qualifies in this case have some people arguing both sides of the issue while claiming only one. I've stopped seriously arguing some time ago, but if I nudge every once in a while the results can be amusing.

Peter, it's really easy to strip out what you call hyperbole (others, such as myself, would call it qualifiers) and make a qualified statement into an absolute statement, which can easily be proven wrong. It's a common tactic (see any of JCO's posts over the past week), but it is generally considered to be an invalid debating approach.
