i spent a lot of time comparing tripods before buying Gitzo CF tripods. i
found them lighter and stronger than any Bogen/Manfrotto competitor in the
same size range. i decided that i just had to get used to the twist locks
instead of the levers, even though they are not as convenient.
for long lenses like your 200-500, i think you will find better results by
draping your arm over the lens and holding the body during exposures. this
assumes you are able to shoot at no less than about 1/500. if you are much
below that speed, you will have to add extra bracing to get sharp images.

For larger lenses it's nhot quite steady enough. Even when using the self
timer with lenses of 200-500mm I find that tah camera is still trembeling
a
little at the time of exposure. But I geuss it a nice compromiser
somewhere
between "portable" and "steady".
