Thanks Bob and everyone else who put their tuppence in, I gathered that it was an atmospheric effect but I was surprised to learn that it's actually past the horizon when it appears to first touch. Mr Nelson sent me a link with some piccies: http://www.sundog.clara.co.uk/atoptics/sunflat.htm I didn't see as many sunsets as I would have liked, and I captured none from the perspective of the west coast, such is life when you are travelling accompanied. I've been a bit spoilt by the most unbelievable scenery though, I just hope that my attempts to capture and reproduce some reflected photons provide at least some sense of how it felt to be there.
