Here's some:
SMC: Super Multi Coating. Refers to a surface treatment of the glass.
M-: The M-series lenses, produced from ca. 1979 I think.
A-: The A-series lenses, produced from ca. 1983 ?
    Has an A setting on the aperture ring, and lets the
    camera house set the aperture automatically.
F-: First series of autofocus lenses.
FA-: Second and current series of autofocus lenses.

An additional asterisk (*) right after the letter means that the lens
contains at least one piece of so-called ED-glass (Extra low Dispersion).
Those lenses are (very) high priced top-performers.
