Yes, like that. When I bought my first SLR the guy in the shop
showed me that exact grip and I've been using it ever since.
For bigger lenses I tend to grip them closer to the front end of the
barrel as it improves stability. The weight is supported at two
points (ie at each end) instead of being able to pivot around near
the centre of gravity, where my hand would otherwise be. Focussing
is a lot easier when you're not wobbling the lens around quite as
much. Just how far forward my hand goes depends on whether I'm using
AF.
Occasionally I'll hold the camera/lens in weird ways but only when
there's a reason. Usually this involves shading the 15mm lens.
