Bruce,
This makes me think of a shot by Galen Rowell, but he would have have
an aggressively posed male figure silhouetted in the "hole".
Upon spotting the two figures, my estimate of the hole size seriously
increased. 
The scene needed the foreground rock and plant. DOF, excellent!
Another hit.
