No autofocus system can read your mind. It's not possible to design a system 
that cold choose from among various objects at various distances. Unless, of 
course, the maker programs rules of composition, which would be very annoying 
and limiting. That's why there's a selective focus mode and a joystick to move 
the sensor. Although good old-fashioned manual focus is frequently the best 
answer in these situations.
