One of the benefits is its small size which, if you want to keep it small, you leave off the grip. But if you want to have a heftier camera, you put on the grip. Best of both worlds. Most other camera manufacturers don't give you that choice - it's either big or bigger... so it's not really a complaint that it is too small just a reason to buy and use the grip if you know what I mean..
