Both camera and lens has to be prepared for USM, so there is no reason why the contacts couldn't be adapted to handle the currents. The problem would be the risk for older equipment that isn't prepared to receive such currents, but as all new lenses have microprecessors identifying them that could be avoided in the camera by only applying the USM when it recognizes a USM lens. IS lenses could be a little different, depending on how camera dependent the solution is. DagT
