There was a high-profile case here a few years ago when the organisers of an annual cycle race only closed one lane of the road. Many of the competitors thought both lanes were closed and someone ended up being killed when they collided with an oncoming car.

The race organiser was convicted of criminal nuisance because, apparently, the details of the road closure hadn't been communicated clearly enough to the competitors. There was a lot of discussion about the implications for other sporting events and I don't remember what came out of it. I think it ended up being basically business as usual with a higher level of awareness of potential criminal liability.
