Not necessarily. If you have a DS, you can use your SD cards in the D with a 10-15% performance penalty using an SD->CF converter (but the D is slow enough that you will likely never see the speed deficit on a fast SD card). If you have a D, you have to buy SD cards to use if you then buy a DS.
I personally don't find the cameras that complex. I know intimately and can remember all the settings and options for all three different digital cameras I own (KM A2, Canon 10D and Pentax *ist DS). If I do happen to forget something before going out with the camera, I keep all the instruction booklets on line in my computer so I can review the controls and settings quickly. I find that once I set a camera up, I normally only have to worry about setting focus, ISO and exposure. Just what I needed to know with film cameras, really... and I don't need to remember how to load and unload film! :-)
